The Bee, 2007
Latex, linen/cotton, wood, paint, paper mache, metal
This is an ensemble from the Sex Clown collection designed by Belgian fashion designer Walter van Beirendonck in 2007 for spring summer 2008.
The museum collects surrealism as well as fashion at the intersection with visual arts. The Bee represents both collection areas. The outfit was presented on the catwalk as a sculpture and aligns conceptually with the theme of sex and eroticism, so important to surrealists. After being displayed in Strange Things – Surrealism and Design, for which Van Beirendonck designed the exhibition layout, the piece was acquired for the museum’s collection. Since then, it has been exhibited multiple times in various museums. The Bee is a gala dress and is worn on the catwalk by a male model. The ensemble can be seen as a personal exploration of self-expression and gender identity. Like the surrealists, Van Beirendonck seeks alternative expressions of beauty and attempts to break societal conventions.
The preservation of the latex suit is problematic: it discolours due to UV-light, and cracks appear with wear and removal. Over fifteen years, three suits have deteriorated. The fourth suit was made directly on the mannequin, but the material remains fragile, meaning The Bee can only be displayed for limited and short periods.
This 3D replica was developed as an experimental educational tool, allowing visitors to view the design from all angles layer by layer, as well as making the conservation challenges visible.
